The following Privacy Policy governs how we (Civil) handle and protect your personal information. You should read it in conjunction with our Terms of Use, which together with any software license agreement, form our contractual relationship with you. By using Civil Comments, the website (“Site”), or any Civil software application (collectively the “Service”), you agree to this Privacy Policy, and any revisions made to this Privacy Policy. Capitalized terms that are not defined in this Privacy Policy have the meaning given them in our Terms of Use. If you do not agree to this Privacy Policy, you are not permitted to use the Service, Civil Comments, or any Civil software application.

By using our Service you understand and agree that we are providing a public comment sharing platform and that we, other Users, or the public may search for, see, use, re-post any of your User Content that you make publicly available through the Service. We are unable to control such uses of your information, and by using such services you assume the risk that the information provided by you may be viewed and used by third parties.

Civil Comments and the Service are not intended, designed for, or directed to children under the age of 13, and we will not intentionally collect or maintain information about anyone under the age of 13. If it comes to our attention that we have received personal information about anyone under the age of 13, such information will be immediately deleted from our records.

If you have questions or complaints regarding our Privacy Policy or practices, please contact us at [email protected]

Personally Identifiable Information

We collect information that can be used to identify you as an individual (“Personally Identifiable Information”) only when you provide such information directly to us in connection with the Service. We ask for Personally Identifiable Information such as your e-mail address when you register for a Civil account, or if you correspond with us (in which case we will also retain our responses). We may also retain any messages you send through the Service, and may collect information you provide in User Content you post to the Service.

We may receive Personally Identifiable Information about you from third parties, including, for example, information about your transactions, purchase history, or relationships with various product and service providers, and your use of certain applications. For example, if you access our website or Service through a third-party connection or log-in, for example, through Twitter, that third party may pass certain information about your use of its service to Civil. This information could include, but is not limited to, the user ID associated with your account, any information you have permitted the third party to share with us, and any information you have made public in connection with that service. You should always review, and if necessary, adjust your privacy settings on third-party websites and services before linking or connecting them to Civil’ website or Service.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

We also collect and use information about your interactions with the Service in a manner and format that does not identify you as an individual (“Non-Personally Identifiable Information”). We may collect, use, and disclose Non-Personally Identifiable Information as set forth below.

Like many websites, when you visit the Service, we may send one or more cookies — a small text file containing a string of alphanumeric characters — to your computer that uniquely identifies your browser and lets Civil help you log in faster and enhance your navigation through the site. A cookie may also convey information to us about how you use the Service (e.g., the pages you view, the links you click and other actions you take on the Service), and allow us to track your usage of the Service over time. A persistent cookie remains on your hard drive after you close your browser. Persistent cookies may be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the site. Persistent cookies can be removed by following your web browser’s directions. A session cookie is temporary and disappears after you close your browser. You can reset your web browser to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, some features of the Service may not function properly if the ability to accept cookies is disabled.

We use third-party analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to help us measure traffic and usage trends for the Service. These tools collect information sent by your browser as part of a web page request, including the web pages you visit, your browser add-ons, your browser’s width and height, and other information that assists us in improving the Service. We collect and use this analytics information in aggregate form such that it cannot reasonably be manipulated to identify any particular individual user.

Log Files

Log file information is automatically reported by your browser each time you access a web page. When you use our Service, our servers automatically record certain log file information. These server logs may include anonymous information such as your web request, Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, browser type, referring / exit pages and URLs, number of clicks and how you interact with links on the Service, domain names, landing pages, pages viewed, and other such information.

We use the information we collect or are provided in the following ways:

  • To present, operate, or improve the Service, including analysis of Service activity;
  • To respond to technical problems;
  • To respond to, process, and deliver your communications or requests;
  • To process job applications;
  • To customize or personalize your online experience, for example to pre-populate forms, or to display or provide you with relevant content or communications;
  • To enforce or protect any right;
  • To investigate or deter against fraudulent, unauthorized, or illegal activity; or
  • To otherwise fulfill the purpose for which the information was provided.

We may link, combine, or supplement the information you provide us with other information we obtain from cookies. We do this to help understand your needs and provide you with better products and services, to identify you when you return to our Service, or to pre-populate forms. We may use anonymous, aggregate personal information for different purposes, like market analysis, traffic flow analysis and reporting, or information based on clickstream data. We use this information for a variety of purposes to examine our traffic in aggregate, to investigate misuse of our network or its users, or to cooperate with law enforcement.

We may share your information as follows:

  • With our partners, affiliates, agents, subcontractors, representatives, or services providers;

  • To protect our property or enforce our rights, or the rights of our affiliates, partners, agents, subcontractors, representatives, or services providers;
  • In response to a court order, subpoena, or warrant, or to comply with a legal requirement or cooperate with an investigation;
  • To identify persons who may be violating the law, our Terms of Use, the rights of third parties, or persons who may be otherwise misusing the Service or its related properties;
  • With your consent, or to fulfill the purpose for which you provided the information; or
  • As permitted by law.

We may use third party service providers such as an email service provider to send out emails on our behalf, a career management platform to collect resumes, or a chat widget that allows us communicate with you. We may share your information with these service providers, and others, as necessary for them to perform their functions. These third party providers are required to keep your information confidential per our agreements with the providers, with limited exceptions. We do not sell, rent, or lease the information we collect to third parties.

The Service may contain links to websites or content sponsored or provided by third parties. These sites and services may use their own cookies or data tracking technologies to collect data or information from you. Civil does not control the practices of these third parties or their websites or content. Civil is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of these third parties. Civil does not share the information that you provide us with these third parties. However, these third parties may obtain information about you if you click on a third-party link.

We follow generally accepted industry standards to protect the personally identifiable information submitted to us. No method of transmission over the Internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure, however. Therefore, while we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

Civil does not require that you provide information through our Service. If you do not wish to provide the information requested, we may not be able to service you properly or provide the benefit for which the information is requested. You may opt out of receiving educational or general update emails from Civil by following the instructions in those emails. If you opt out, we may still send you business-related communications, such as emails about your accounts, product notices, or our ongoing business relations.

We will retain your information for as long as we determine necessary. You may contact [email protected] to request that we delete or amend your information. In some cases, we may not be able to delete your personal information, in which case we will let you know we are unable to do so and provide an explanation.
